Global RAM Shortage Worsens as AI Features Drive Memory Demand to Record Highs

A worsening shortage of RAM chips is rippling through the global electronics market, driving up prices for smartphones, laptops, servers, and gaming hardware as artificial intelligence features demand ever-increasing amounts of memory.

The shortage, which began building in late 2025, has intensified as device manufacturers race to integrate on-device AI capabilities that require significantly more RAM than previous generations of software. Flagship smartphones now ship with 16 to 24 gigabytes of memory as standard, while AI-capable laptops increasingly require 32 gigabytes or more.

Memory manufacturers Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron have all reported capacity constraints, with production unable to keep pace with demand from both consumer electronics and the data center sector. High-bandwidth memory used in AI accelerators has been particularly scarce, with lead times stretching to several months.

The supply crunch is having tangible effects on consumer pricing. Average laptop prices have risen by 8 to 12 percent over the past quarter, with memory costs cited as a primary driver. Gaming console manufacturers are reportedly delaying next-generation hardware launches due to component availability concerns.

Data center operators, who consume vast quantities of high-performance memory for AI training and inference workloads, have been securing long-term supply agreements that further tighten availability for other sectors. The competition for limited supply has created a two-tier market where enterprise buyers receive priority allocation.

Analysts project the shortage will persist through at least the first half of 2027, as new fabrication facilities require 18 to 24 months to reach full production capacity. In the meantime, consumers and manufacturers alike are adapting to a market where memory has become one of the most constrained components in the technology supply chain.
