US-Iran Conflict Enters Day 16 as Trump Claims Iran ‘Defeated Militarily’

news

The US-Israel military campaign against Iran has entered its sixteenth day with no signs of an imminent ceasefire, as President Donald Trump declared that Iran has been defeated militarily while acknowledging that negotiations over terms have not yet produced results.

In a phone interview with NBC on Saturday, Trump said Iran is ready to make a deal but that the terms offered so far are not sufficient. He also made the unverified claim that he is hearing the new supreme leader may be dead, though he provided no evidence to support the assertion.

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth reported that more than 15,000 enemy targets have been struck since operations began on February 28, averaging over 1,000 strikes per day. The scale of the campaign has drawn comparisons to the largest US military operations in recent decades.

The human cost continues to mount on both sides of the conflict. More than 1,400 people have been killed since the war began, according to reports from multiple sources. Tehran's governor reported that at least 10,000 residential homes have been damaged or completely destroyed by US-Israeli attacks, raising concerns about civilian casualties and infrastructure destruction.

Iran has responded with missile and drone attacks targeting Israel, regional US military bases, and several Gulf nations. Iranian missiles prompted Israeli air defense systems to fire interceptors over Tel Aviv early Sunday morning, highlighting the continued threat to Israeli population centers despite the overwhelming military advantage enjoyed by the US-Israel coalition.

One of Iran's most significant remaining sources of leverage is its control over the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow maritime passage through which roughly 20 percent of the world's oil supply transits. Any disruption to shipping through the strait would have immediate and severe consequences for global energy markets, which are already experiencing significant price increases since the conflict began.

The war has also had cascading effects across the region, with Israeli attacks in Lebanon killing 826 people and displacing more than 800,000 since February 28. International organizations have called for an immediate ceasefire and humanitarian access to affected areas.
